The thermoblock is a unit which interlinks the concrete mix with one or more insulating elements and allows the realization of single laying walls, also load-bearing for seismic areas, with a high degree of thermal and acoustic insulation.

There can be two different types of this masonry unit, varying according to their application:
load-bearing wall;
curtain wall.
In both types the insulating element can be either central or lateral.

This masonry unit is unique because, regardless of the position of the insulating insert, it allows a traditional laying. In the 4 courses (2 horizontal and 2 vertical) standard grout is used, without any necessity to utilize special glues or bonding agents. In the overlapping of thermoblocks, in spite of the grout thickness, the insulating inserts create a continuous contact, thus avoiding all thermal bridges.
Another peculiar feature of this block is its upper profile which has some laying grooves offering the following advantages:
they avoid that the weight of the layers of blocks during cubing operations should damage the insulating insert;
they help the operator during the laying of blocks since the grooves act as reference points.
The thickness of the groove determines the quantity of grout which is used between one block and the other (i.e.: 10, 12, 15 mm., depending on the local building habits).
THERMOBLOCK
The flexibility of Thermo Sacme system regards the execution of thermoblocks of different lengths, heights, with different thickness of the insulating inserts, made with different kind of aggregates. The variety of these elements does not cause any prejudice to the perfect functionality of the system.
In addition to the “standard” thermoblock, Sacme provides special elements which can help you solve all the issues of insulated concrete block wall system (i.e.: half block, right corner unit, left corner unit, etc.). These “special” elements are included into the mould, together with the “standard” elements. This is a perfect way to optimize the number of moulds and to have cubes of blocks which include all the elements required in the buildings. The “special” elements can be used as one-piece element, or cut according to building requirements.

Jolly element
The Jolly element is constituted by a shaped insulating insert and by a concrete mix wall only on one side. This element is used in the building of floor units and of load-bearing pilasters. It is an indispensable element because it guarantees the total continuity of insulation, without any thermal bridge.

This thermal block can be used as a replacement of the retaining panels for the pouring of concrete mix, and it can also be used as a traditional building unit. The insulating element of this block can be placed either in central or in side position; this thermal block can have open holes or holes which are half closed, and half open, thus assuring a saving of 50% in the pouring of concrete mix.

This thermoblock has the specificity of a side insulating insert; it is indispensable for the construction of lintels in the masonry structure since it assures the total continuity of the wall insulation, and avoids all thermal bridges.

These thermoblocks for partition walls are constituted by:
an insulating insert (thickness 7 / 9 cm.);
a double insulating insert (thickness 12 / 15 cm.).
The peculiarity of this partition unit is that the insulating insert is cut following a special profile, with grooves where the grout interconnecting the elements is applied, thus allowing the perfect continuity of the insulating inserts and the total elimination of thermal bridges.

The most severe requirements expressed by the laws for acoustic insulation are satisfied by using our partition elements; in particular these elements are used where it is necessary to decrease dramatically the noise level, i.e. hospitals, schools, health care buildings, etc.
The thermo-acoustic partition elements are light and easy to handle. In addition, they allow for easy pathways for all the conduits in the building. Electrical conduits, water and draining ducts can be executed without any interference in the insulation provided by the thermoblocks.

solution with insulation on the floor side – the hourdi acts as the laying element of the beam (insulation on the CEILING side).

The peculiarity of Sacme thermo-acoustic hourdi is to be found in the exclusive design which allows the perfect reversibility of the laying of this unit, a fact which optimizes the different designing habits. The application of both solutions we are proposing gives the incredible advantage of one and unique laying operation, with excellent results pursuant to the laws for thermal and acoustic insulation. This also results in lower labour costs and therefore in an advantageous saving!

This hourdi has the peculiarity of an insulating insert interlinked with the concrete on the floor side. This innovative design gives the possibility to realize floors with embedded cells favouring the crossing of the concrete castings. The use of these “special” hourdies allows the realization of more solid monolithic structures and gives the designers the advantage of an optimal solution for floors of particularly wide dimensions.
After pouring the concrete castings, insulating panels of the same type as the EPS of the thermal hourdies shall be placed along the courses; in this way the floor structure shall be perfectly insulated, with no interference in the attributes of the load bearing structure of the floor itself.

In fact, Sacme guarantees the future approval of the thermoblocks by the local authorities in the production country, according to the laws in force there, through the support of Istituto Giordano, a prestigious and internationally renowned institute.
To obtain the certificates, Sacme prepares an introductory study of the thermoblock which will be produced, with the indication of the aggregates used in the production process and of the insulating material, and draws up a technical data sheet. Then, with the application of the patented Thermo Sacme system, the production of thermoblocks is realized and the certifications obtained. These certificates have full legal validity and represent essential elements for the designers using blocks for the correct implementation of masonry units having thermal insulation and consequently the approval for energy saving.

The certificates which are required for the correct design and execution of modern buildings are those referred to thermal conductivity (U = W/m²K), compressive strength resistance (N/mm²), fire resistance (REI) and acoustic insulation (Sound Absorption).

Thanks to the excellent relation and the ongoing agreement with Istituto Giordano, Sacme represents a valid support for those customers interested in the Certificates which can be released by Istituto Giordano itself or by its counterparts abroad.
Sacme started the production of mobile block machines for thermoblocks in 1992, thus giving a concrete reply to the necessity for thermal insulation in the buildings of the Middle East area. Then the production of this kind of equipment has undergone continual refinements and presently there are more than 100 thermoblock units spread all over the world.
The wide experience acquired during the years has given Sacme the best instruments to face efficiently and successfully the issues of thermal insulation and to propose rational solutions for perfectly efficient block plants. Sacme has the right answers for any production need in the building materials industry; the wide range of products supplied goes from the single block machine to the complete block plant, including concrete batching and mixing systems, along with material handling equipment and complete turnkey plants.
In addition to experience and efficiency, Sacme offers an unprecedented patent protection, that is a set of patents covering not only the thermoblocks production process, but also the building system, that is the concrete products used in the construction of buildings.

In the manufacturing of thermoblocks for buildings pursuant to the laws on energy saving the features of the insulating elements are essential.
Among many different insulating elements which are used in building products, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is the most popular.
This insulating material offers the right balance between quality, price, ease of use. It is an environmentally friendly material, being composed by 98% air and only 2% material. EPS demands little energy for its molding because, for the expansion of the small pearls, only water vapour is used.
In order to be used in the building industry, EPS must be self-extinguishing.
Other EPS features, like its density, the open cells, the closed cells, etc. may vary according to the objective of its use, for example the thermal insulation or the sound absorption.
In the case of thermal insulation, it is advisable to use polystyrene inserts having a density of approx. 25-27 Kg./m³, with a Lambda value of approx. 0,035. The insert thickness shall be decided according to these parameters.
For sound absorption, reference is made to the producer’s technical data sheet.
Shape of the insulating insert: in order to create a perfect interconnection between concrete mix and insulating insert and produce a monolithic structure, it is necessary to realize dovetail joints, normally in vertical courses.

In case of special building structures, like floor units, panelling, etc, or in case of aggregates not bonding together, the general orientation is towards dovetail joints with courses both vertical and horizontal.
If one wishes to combine both thermal and acoustic insulation, the best results are obtained by using inserts with rounded, concave, convex profiles, always with dovetail joints.

Only in some countries where there are specific standards for the insulating inserts, these elements are obtained from a molding process. Generally speaking, they are cut by an electrified wire pantograph, from an EPS lump block.
With the experience acquired during the years, Sacme is now able to transfer his know-how and his specific instructions to the EPS suppliers in order to obtain shaped modular insulating inserts with the cheapest prices and without any waste material.
In any case, the Thermo Sacme system is not uniquely restricted to the use of EPS; others insulating materials can be used, like for example mineralised wood, graphites, etc., on condition that they are compatible with the units to be produced.

Another method which extraordinarily helps meeting the requirements for thermal and acoustic insulation is that regarding the use of bulk expanded polystyrene (in grains) together with a mixture of sand, gravel and cement.
This mix is a valid substitute for the expanded clay and volcanic natural aggregates like lapilli, pumice, etc. It helps obtaining better results with much lower costs! The polystyrene grains participate in making a light weight concrete mix which dramatically improves the thermal and acoustic properties of the concrete building elements, and noticeably increases the fire-resistance rating, achieving values which can hardly be obtained by using other techniques (REI 240).

The light weight concrete mix can be used for all the elements we have mentioned, that is for thermoblocks, hourdies, elements for external walls, internal walls, etc. It is a construction material which is very light, easy to work, non-toxic and non-corrosive.It resists rot and can be mixed by traditional mixers.
The light weight concrete is a good friend of Sacme machines, and does not require any special application for its use.
The vibro presses proposed for the realization of thermoblocks are designed and manufactured with 3 types of vibration, a feature which only belongs to Sacme. In fact, the various aggregate mix, typical of different areas, find their best ally in the special versatility of Sacme vibration which ensures optimal quality standards.
The upper pressing by vibration is common to all machines of this type. In any case, Sacme has the peculiarity of offering an exclusive system of cardanic joint of two oil bath vibrators which produces a real effect of one-direction vibration giving the maximum precision in pressing and compaction.
The bottom vibration/vibrating plate is particularly suitable for medium-heavy concrete mix. It guarantees an optimal and uniform filling of the mix into the mould.
A peculiar feature of Sacme is the upper part of the vibrating plate which gives the possibility to replace an anti-wear plate directly in contact with the mould. This plate can be replaced by one with a shaped profile in case it is necessary to produce blocks with “groove” joint. The “tongue” joint instead is made by the pressing stripper. This plate can be replaced singularly in each mould.
